The Town travelled to league basement side Gillingham looking to erase the memory of the previous weeks defensive horror show at Bitton and came away with a comfortable win and a clean sheet.
The visitors got off to a great start and took the lead after only 5 minutes when Higdons through ball found Ash Barnett and the wingers cross was slammed home at the far post by Ben Thomson’s left foot drive.
Almost immediately Rob Brown produced a fine one handed save to turn a Agbo 25 yard drive over the bar. On 15 minutes Barnett, who enjoyed a fruitful afternoon on the Town right flank pulled back an inviting cross which was just missed by Rogers as the Town continued to look dangerous when pushing forward.
On 34 minutes Higdon became provider when his cross was met by a perfectly timed run by Leigh Rogers and his flicked header found the corner of the net to put Melksham 2-0 ahead. On 40 minutes Kovacs saw his close range effort turned aside for a corner from which Barnett slashed his shot wide and the Town went into the half time break 2-0 ahead.
On 55 minutes Brown tipped over a freekick as the homeside looked for a way back into the game but at the other end the Town nearly went three up when Kovacs headed a Thomson cross against the bar and on 70 minutes Higdon would have been disappointed to only head into the keepers arms when he found himself unmarked from a corner.
The third and final goal of the game came on 80 minutes when a Thomson corner was nodded home at the far post by Ryan Bennet and although Brown needed to be alert to keep out a late effort in truth this was comfortable win for the Town.
