MELKSHAM recently joined in with the nation to celebrate the Queen becoming the longest reigning monarch in British history.
On Wednesday 9th September, Queen Elizabeth II celebrated 63 years on the throne, beating Queen Victoria’s record as the UK’s longest serving monarch.
Melksham Town Crier, Peter Dauncey, along with 150 town criers around the country cried a special proclamation in honour of her Majesty.
It said, “Today Queen Elizabeth II has reigned for 63 years and 216 days, breaking the record set by Queen Victoria. It gives me great pleasure on behalf of Melksham Town Council and the good people of our town to offer sincere congratulations to our sovereign on becoming the longest serving monarch in British history. We wish her good health and long may she reign.”
Melksham’s bells pealed out first thing to celebrate the day. The ringers rang Stratton Queens to honour her before drinking her health.
