The award-winning Proteus Theatre Company presents ‘Becoming Hattie’ at the Irene Usher Pavilion, Rusty Lane, Seend (SN12 6NN) on Friday 11th March at 7.30pm.
It’s 1974 and eight-year- old Jo is snuggled up on the settee in her flammable polyester nightie, watching the family’s first colour TV. ‘Sykes’ is on and there, on the screen, is a woman unlike anyone Jo has ever seen. That woman is Hattie Jacques. Forty years on and Jo has followed in Hattie’s footsteps. But is there a place for her in tv, film or theatre? Why does she only get cast as the nurse, never the surgeon? Why is she always the council estate mum in ‘Casualty’ with the dodgy kid, the high pony tail and the pack of pitbulls? Why is she too fat to play Lady Macbeth?
Thoughtful, funny, warm and nostalgic, this one-woman show takes an affectionate look at the life and career of a remarkable woman, as well as being a witty, caustic observation of modern day show business.
Tickets £8/conc. £7. Suitable for 15+, available from Seend Post Office 01380 828949 or Penny England 01380 828949.
