MELKSHAM Seniors Forum has had a busy month with its regular film show, discussion groups, charity cake sales and more.
Group chairman Brian Warwick reports, “September was a busy month for the seniors with several excellent events. The film show unfortunately was way below our high standard. The film ‘Best in Show’ was based on American humour and often crude innuendos, which were so appalling that our own humour took over and we were left laughing at the dreadful story line and acting. We will not make that mistake again.
“Our own website is now up and running so you can check out coming events and news items on the web at www.melk shamseniors.co.uk as well as in the Melksham News.
“Congratulations to the Seniors at Orchard Gardens and Thornbank who raised £300 for the Macmillan Cancer appeal with their own ‘bake a cake and eat’ event. With the other events for the appeal seniors across Melksham raised approx £900.
“Our local discussions groups are proving a real success; they are based on a short talk followed by a discussion along topical issues. Last week’s was around care in the community and the council’s ‘Help to Live at Home’ project. It got rather heated at times, especially around the subjects of cuts and issues of need for improved consultation with service users and older people.
“We are proposing to increase the frequency and identify new venues for the discussions, perhaps around an afternoon tea. Any suggestion of venues or willingness to host a small discussion group would be most be most welcome.
“This week we are celebrating the International Day of Older People at a party and activity afternoon at the Forest community centre. Another date for your diaries is the film show on Monday 17th October at the Assembly Hall. Details are on our notice in this edition of the Melksham News along with details of our other important events.
“We are also busy organising the entertainment and catering arrangements for our great Christmas Party on Monday 19th December. Tickets are always in demand and they will be available on a first come basis in November at our activity club event on the 7th November, the special Area Board meeting on the 16th November, and at our film and AGM on the 21st November.
“This includes the seniors’ annual afternoon meeting with Area Board on the 16th November. This is a great opportunity for any of the organisations that have any affinity with older people to come along and help to define how we can all work in closer partnership and obtain the support of the Area Board. As well as this, we will have the opportunity to raise any other issues facing older people in our own community.”
