Melksham Town Council will be raising the Commonwealth flag at 10am on Monday 13th March to celebrate Commonwealth Day.
This unique initiative, now in its fourth year, will see over 950 other Commonwealth Flags raised in Commonwealth countries throughout the world.
It has caught the imagination of thousands of participants, enabling people of all ages in their local communities to become involved and join with others worldwide in associating themselves with widespread public expression of commitment to the Commonwealth, appreciation of the values it stands for, and opportunities offered to its citizens.
A specially written Commonwealth Affirmation will be read out before the raising of the Commonwealth Flag which will fly proudly over the Town Hall until 10am the following day.
The Right Honourable Patricia Scotland QC, secretary-general of the Commonwealth of Nations says, “Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth provides a splendid opportunity every year for people from all walks of life to join with others in their local community to celebrate Commonwealth Day in association with fellow citizens throughout our worldwide family.
“Local and national flag raising ceremonies in school yards, on village greens, in town squares, and on mountaintops and beaches bring greater understanding and appreciation of the values and principles of the Commonwealth Charter – to which the governments of each of our 53 member states subscribe, and to which each of us individually as Commonwealth citizens can recommit ourselves on Commonwealth Day.”
