Melksham’s Wiltshire Wonders are top of their group in national skittles championship

Melksham skittle team, Wiltshire Wonders, got their Serious About Events-sponsored national skittles season under way with a home game vs The Glums from Paulton and a convincing 370-319 win. Top score was Luke Rudman with 55 including 2 spares.

Next up was a trip to Weston Super Mare vs The Hawkeyes. The game was to and fro, with The Hawkeyes taking a 15 pin lead at the halfway point. The Hawkeyes managed to turn that deficit on its head at the 3/4 mark and the Wonders had gone from being 15 up, to 14 down. Luckily a 13 and a 23 spare from the final pair saw the Wonders go on to win by 9 pins 369/378 and take the 4 points back to Wiltshire. Top scorers were Luke Rudman and JD Wiltshire, both with 58.

Two away games followed, the first the return fixture at Paulton. This was always going to be a tough fixture on a tough alley and unfortunately the Wonders lost by 12 pins, which was still a great effort. Mark Wiltshire was top score with 45 pins.

The next game was a must-win if the Wonders were to top the group and gain automatic qualification to the grand finals in Torquay, and the Wonders didn’t disappoint, with a fabulous win at Glastonbury Football Club away to Tackers Boys. a 5 pin win and another 4 points put the Wonders top of the group with 2 home games left to play.

Top score again was Luke Rudman with 51 including a 14 spare in the final leg.
