PUPILS from Forest and Sandridge School left school on the last day of term barefooted as they donated their shoes to the charity, Mercy Action.
Children who would no longer need their school shoes as they would be buying new ones, were invited to leave them behind at the end of term to be donated to children in the Philippines.
Mercy Action is a charity based in Bath, which provides care for vulnerable children in the Philippines. Although the charity is able to offer food and uniforms to several hundreds of children, shoes are particularly expensive, and so many go without. The idea for pupils to donate their shoes was inspired by retired teaching assistant Sue Henderson who is a supporter of the charity, and her proposal was enthusiastically received.
Headteacher Anna Wilcox said, “We were thrilled to support the charity and it’s such a simply way for us to help children who are less fortunate.”
