‘On yer bike!’ Seend locals prepare to cycle the length of Great Britain

TWOfriends fromSeend are preparing to embark on an epic 969-mile cycle ride the length of Britain to raise money for charity.

Jenny Dalton and John Whalley will be cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats over nine days in September, with the aim of raising £5,000 for their chosen charities Macmillan Cancer Support and the Vodafone Foundation.

“We are two friends from Seend, who are probably more at home drinking a cider in a sunny beer garden somewhere, than cycling across the country,” joked John.

“This year, however, we have swapped our beer mitts for cycling gloves and have been training all year for the challenge.

“As part of our training we have cycled numerous 60-100-mile, one-day organised sportives around the local counties.

“We’ve cycled 250 miles ‘across’ the country from Aberystwyth to Skegness over four days in May.

“Also, taken a nine-day cycling trip along the French coast and not least, got up at 6.30am each morning to get an hour’s training in before work.”

Having recently lost two close family members to cancer, John has chosen to raise money for Macmillan as a way of saying thank you for the support that he and his family received and to anyone who works in the area of cancer care.

Long-time employee of Vodafone, Jenny, has chosen to raise money for the company’s own charity, the Vodafone Foundation.

The Vodafone Foundation supports projects around the world that are focused on delivering public benefit through the use of mobile technology across the areas of health, education and disaster relief.

This year, the Vodafone Foundation will be working with the United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees to improve the lives of those forcibly displaced from their homes.

Jenny and John will set off on their nine-day adventure in September and you will be able to find out how they get on in the Melksham News.
