Broughton Gifford Bowls Club

EARLY evening torrential rain, which stopped as suddenly as it had begun, caused a ten minute delay to the start of the MWL Div. 111 fixture at Holt, where Trowbridge Police hosted Broughton Gifford on the 17th August.

Prior to the start, both captains agreed to play the required minimum forty ends (across the four rinks) as more storm clouds were gathering ominously over and around the green. Broughton were eager to get back to winning ways after a recent run of disappointing results which saw them slip from second to fourth place in the league table.

The green bowled surprisingly well, despite the earlier deluge, and both sides soon adapted to the wet playing surface, finding a consistent line and length to the three quarter length jacks which both sides favoured. At the halfway stage the game was close, with Broughton holding a two shot advantage. The lead was extended by the close of play with Broughton winning by forty shots to thirty four, which gained a 12-2 points victory.

Teams and scores: K Darby, J Stewart & V Davis 12-8: G Whitfield, L Bray & R Bourne 10-9; R Mizen, D Elkins & S Hockings 7-10; R Warburton, M Davies & P Stocker 11-7.

The win moves Broughton up to third place, six points behind second place Spencer Melksham. With just two more games to play, both teams have a chance of gaining the second promotion place, Warminster have already been confirmed as champions.
