News From Westminster- By Michelle Donelan MP

AFTER what has no doubt been a stressful wait for many, I was thrilled to see the exceptional A-level results coming out of our local schools this week.

I am immensely proud of the results in the constituency; having visited every school personally, I know this is testament to the hard work put in by both students and teachers and is richly deserved.

At a time when so many are choosing their pathway in life, I am excited that so much more is on offer than just a binary university or work decision. Apprenticeships, vocational work options and part-time study/work options mean that young adults today are able to shape their own destiny in a way not possible just 10 years ago. I would like to send my congratulations to every single student and wish you the best in whatever next step you decide to take.

On the back of the success of last year’s event, I will be re-running the Wiltshire Festival of Engineering again this November. The event promises to be bigger and better than ever to accommodate the high demand we are seeing. Designed to encourage young people into engineering and to fill the much-talked about skills shortage in this area, local businesses have already started signing up to inspire people into engineering. We have some fantastic and innovative businesses across Wiltshire who are desperate for engineering skills and so it’s vital we reach out to young adults and let them know the great career options available to them.

Following on from my day shadowing a care worker, this week I also visited Dorothy House Hospice, here in the constituency. I have been inspired by the level of dedication, selflessness and compassion shown by all those in the care sector I have met this summer. Whilst we face significant challenges in the coming years, providing for care across all stages of life, we should recognise carers for the diverse range of skills they have, the innovation care providers show and the flexibility they demonstrate to tackle the current needs head on.
