CORE Church celebrated another successful Christmas Day lunch at Melksham’s Assembly Hall that saw over 150 Christmas dinners prepared and enjoyed.
Gavin Owen of Core Church said, “It was another great Christmas Day at Melksham Assembly Hall in 2017 as we served up 150 Christmas dinners. As usual, the preparations began long in advance of the big day. The Core Church team had their first Christmas Day planning meeting back in September and made the big decision to try having two sittings this year. The large numbers attending over the last few years had meant that ovens were crammed to capacity and it was taking an increasingly long time to get food from the kitchen to the tables during service.
“Having two sittings meant changing the timetable for the day that had been in place for 10 years. Instead of carols at 11am followed by lunch at 1pm, it became first sitting at 12pm, carols at 2pm and second sitting at 3pm. The kitchen team had to start an hour earlier and to prevent packing-up going on late into the evening, the crockery, cutlery and glassware were all washed-up on Boxing Day. The whole team agreed afterwards that it was well worth the extra effort, as the day went so smoothly and the plan is to continue with two sittings in the future.
“This year the Assembly Hall was set up on the 23rd and a big thank you goes to all the people who turned up to help. The room looked great, with the tables beautifully laid ready for all the guests in both sittings. It was during set up that we had a visit from the Emery family, who had brought homemade fudge and Christmas cards for us to give as presents to our guests on Christmas Day. What a lovely thing to do!
“Our three longest standing supporters, Melksham Assembly Hall, I. D. Newman & Sons Butchers and Leszan Travel, were there for us once more. They all make an essential contribution and we thank them for their generosity and community spirit.
“The world’s greatest cheesecake was made for us again by the wonderful Angela, as well as chocolate yule log – you could taste the love! Waitrose donated £500 to the cause, the second time they have helped us, both times completely unprompted by us, which is greatly to their credit. We also received donations of soft drinks and food from numerous local people who wanted to show their support for the event – thank you so much, every contribution is gratefully received. A huge thank you is also due to all the people who chose to spend Christmas Day with our guests and came to serve and eat dinner with them.
“Finally, we live in uncertain times but you may depend on this, Core Church will continue to serve up Christmas dinner to anyone who wants to join us, no matter what it takes! We wish you all a very Happy New Year.”
