A new weekly activity and social club for Melksham over 55s, was launched on Thursday 8th February, and will run at the Riverside Club on Thursday mornings from 10.30am until 12.30pm.
The new club has been well-received.
Organiser Brian Warwick, from the Melksham Seniors group said, “The morning got off to a great start, with a super musical performance from some of the members of Melksham Harmonic and Ukulele Group, followed by some incredible funny renderings of hu-morous songs from days gone by led by Sue Stone, well-supported by Claire Webber, who is well know for her falls and balance classes at the Scout Hall on a Monday.
“There was a presentation of an excellent video, highlighting an incredible range of fun games and activities that could be enjoyed by all ages and abilities.
“The attendees were also invited to give their own frank views on whether such a club is needed and if so, how it should be financed and developed.
“Ideas were also sought as to the type of activities that would be ever evolving week upon week.
“By a big majority, members voted for a low cost weekly charge, supplemented with fund raising and donations sought. Signposting to local charitable funding to help develop and support the club was suggested, with health and wellbeing activities to help reduce loneliness in the community.
“The request for suggestions on activities were wide and varied, and would create an exciting rolling programme week upon week. These included some nice trips out and a number of great opportunities for speakers on a very wide range of subjects. We particularly liked the comment that there should plenty of time for a good natter over a cuppa, thus enabling a chat and socialising without encumbrance from other discussion or activities.
“This coming week we will be having a public debate with representatives of Wiltshire NHS and the Gifford Surgery to discuss with us the issues around the proposed repeat Prescription Ordering Direct (POD) service. (See our advert )
“On the 22nd February many of those suggested activities and socialising opportunities will be made available. Then on the 1st March, we will be putting on a fun St David Day. Both events start at 10.30am.”
