Melksham weathers the storm for carnival

Aloeric School’s ‘An English Country Garden’

AFTER weeks of glorious sunshine and scorching temperatures, the heavens decided to open on the worst day possible; the day of the Melksham Carnival – but the torrential rain and the high winds were not enough to dampen the spirits of the community, who lined the streets to celebrate the annual event.

Hundreds of people gathered along the route to cheer on the procession of nearly 30 floats and groups who, prior to the start of the carnival, had to battle against severe storms to prepare for the event.

Thankfully, as the procession began, the rains took a hiatus, allowing the crowds to enjoy highlights such as an under the sea adventure with the Melksham Swordfish Amateur Swimming Club; a spectacular volcanic eruption on the Melksham Rugby Club float; high energy dance routines from In2Dance, Enigma and 4Stars Dance; and Shaw School’s celebration of this year’s centenary events.

Earlier on in the day, locals of all ages enjoyed the Family Fun Day in King George Vplaying field, with stalls, face painting, a fun dog show and the bonniest baby competition.

Carnival committee member Christine York said, “What a great turnout!  A big thank you to all the people who attended the Fun Day and for Fantasy Radio for their broadcast.

“The procession would not be what it is without the continued support of the people returning each year and a lot of new floats joining us. The carnival is well loved and greatly supported by the people of Melksham every year and it’s this support that the committee appreciate and makes all the hard work throughout the year worthwhile.”

This year’s winners were as follows; Best Float – Melksham Rugby Club. Best Walking Entry – Ed’s Biker Babes. Best Performance Group – In2dance. Best School Entry – Aloeric Primary School. The Royalty Choice – New Male Majorettes. Bonniest Baby – Phoebe Hanroads. Best Dog in Show – Lottie, owned by the Alford family.
