A man has been arrested after police officers attending a report of domestic violence in Melksham were assaulted.
Police were called to Aldi supermarket in Melksham at around 2.50pm on Sunday 4th November by concerned members of the public who had seen a couple arguing outside the store. Officers attended the scene and carried out a search of the area, before going to an address in Broughton Gifford.
When police arrived, the victim disclosed a number of incidents when she had been assaulted by her partner. The man fled from officers and deliberately slammed the front door on a female police officer’s arm, before spitting at two other officers.
A 30-year-old man from Broughton Gifford was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent, assault by beating, and three counts of assaulting a police officer.
Sergeant Jemma Hum-phreys, from Wiltshire West Community Policing Team said, “We would like to thank the members of the public who phoned us about this argument, as, when we spoke to the victim, we discovered she had been subject to a catalogue of abuse over a long period of time. These police officers were subjected to a barrage of violence and verbal abuse by the suspect.
“This behaviour is not acceptable and we will not tolerate assaults on our officers and staff.”
