Man sentenced for 10 months imprisonment after assaulting partner

A man has been jailed for 10 months imprisonment after assaulting his partner in Pewsey.

Ratnasingham Sumanraj, aged 27, of Beanacre Road, Melksham, was sentenced at Salisbury Crown Court on Friday 23rd November.

Just after 4pm on 26th August, Sumanraj went to his place of work at a garage in Pewsey, taking his partner with him.

The couple had been arguing for several hours. While at work, Sumanraj kicked his partner to the head in an unprovoked attack that knocked her unconscious. The assault happened while there were customers in the store.

He then dragged her out of view before returning back to the till to serve customers.

PC Tom Crabtree said, “When the victim reported the incident to police, she said she was unaware of how she had been struck due to the impact of the blow, but initially, she thought she had been hit with a bottle.

“Officers were able to determine exactly what happened through CCTV enquiries and Sumanraj was arrested. The victim was taken to hospital for observation overnight due to her loss of consciousness but has since recovered, physically. However, domestic abuse can have a really negative impact on someone’s mental health long after an attack has taken place.

“We encourage anyone who may be in an abusive relationship – whether that be physical or psychological abuse – to report it to police. Often victims will feel trapped, but there is so much help available. Please speak to someone immediately.”

As well as the 10-month prison sentence, he was also sentenced to two months imprisonment to run concurrently in relation to a separate offence of assault by beating and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £140.
