New PM must deliver Brexit
No one could ever say that my years as an MP have been anything other than eventful. Another twist of history happened the other week when the Prime Minister announced that she will resign on the 7th June and the leadership election will then follow.
However the new Prime Minster will not have an easy job by any stretch of the imagination because they will face the same parliamentary arithmetic and make up – a parliament which has consistently sought to block Brexit.
The new PM must be forceful and determined to overcome the inevitable barriers that they will face because we must deliver Brexit to deliver on the referendum result. The delay to Brexit is a massive betrayal to democracy, one which churns my stomach and makes me feel sick – when politicians think they know better than their voters, then democracy is broken. I have consistently voted for Brexit, to keep no deal on the table and against any delays, but we need all MPs to do this. The uncertainty is damaging business confidence and their ability to plan and invest. We must progress matters to protect local jobs, as well as protect our democracy.
The selection of the new Conservative party leader and Prime Minster works via a series of knock out votes in the House of Commons amongst Conservative MPs and then the final two go to the membership. At the time of writing this, there are 13 candidates – so it will not be a quick race!
The frontrunners are Boris, Gove, Hunt, Javid and Rabb – as you won’t all get a vote, I would love to know your thoughts. I shall be asking them several questions and will consider your views. Personally, I want someone who will deliver Brexit, but also has a vision for our country domestically. I want the new Prime Minster to invest more in our schools and focus on education as the key means to social mobility, I want a PM who will ensure our NHS works for all – from doctors’ appointments to operations – who will invest more in the police, so we have more bobbies on the beat. We need to keep taxes down so you can decide how best to spend your money and we need to foster the best environments for businesses to flourish, so that they can employ more people.
