Reigning Moonrakers Tourist Trophy double rink champions, Broughton Gifford, will bid to reach the final again this year when they meet Salisbury in the semi-final on the 6th August.
This follows victories over Swindon West End, Amesbury and Warminster. The game against Amesbury was played under a scorching sun on the hottest day of the year. The conditions were testing for the players, who sweltered in the afternoon heat for close to three hours. The team consisted of Rodney Bourne, Ray Thomas, Dave Alford (capt) & Steve Topp who played at Amesbury, while the quartet of Vince Davis, Richard Mizen, Barry Freeman & Trevor Cooke played in the home tie. The temperature had cooled a week later for the quarter-final tie against Warminster and conditions were ideal for bowling. There was one team change with the return of Kevin Holmes, who played in the home tie. The last two mentioned games were keenly contested, with BG winning by four shots on each occasion.
The MWTL match on the 18th July saw a return to form for BG after a run of disappointing results. The mid-table match against local opposition resulted in a 12-2 win for BG, which saw recent signing Matt White play his first game as skip. His rink of Hayden Arlett and Tony Stanley raced ahead to lead 17-1 at the halfway stage, going on to win by 23-13. Other winning rinks: Keith Darby, Nic Paris & Pete Rigby 19-13; Roger Warburton, Mervyn Davies & Paul Stocker 16-15.
Broughton ladies have maintained their top form in the Nor-West League, with fine wins over Devizes by 4-2 and Calne 5-1. They also avenged their only defeat of the season with a 6-0 whitewash over second placed Corsham. To date the BGs have won seven, drawn one and lost one and have amassed 38 points. Rink scores against Corsham: Sue Davies, Margery Mandryko & Debbie Bishop 23-10; Margaret Cooke, Heather Davis & Gwenda Kelley (capt) 18-12.
