THE Melksham Community Meals Team had a busy time for VE Day delivering party bags to 50 of their users. The oldest couple were Allan and Edna who celebrated their 76 wedding anniversary on 6th May.
“Before lockdown Melksham Community Meals had planned to celebrate 75th anniversary of VE day with 1945 meal prices for the lunches on Friday 8th May, a sing song in the afternoon and a Ball in the evening,” explained Sue Mortimer from Melksham Community Meals.
“These things (like everything else during this pandemic) had to be cancelled. But delivery of the VE Day party bags was a small thing that we thought we could do to mark the 75th VE day celebrations for our users.
“Deliveries were made to 50 people. We do not know everyone’s address so sorry if you are a user and didn’t get a bag.
“The party bags consisted of sandwiches, cake and fruit. Sadly celebration chocolate did not arrive, but when it does, we shall EAT IT (only joking we will keep for later event!)
The children from the River Mead school made bunting and flags with which our users were delighted to receive.
“They all so had a copy of Pam Ayres Corona Poem and a copy of You’ll Never Walk Alone.
“It was really lovely to see and distant chat to everyone. The oldest couple I delivered to was Allan and Edna they celebrated their 76th Wedding Anniversary just two days before. It was a real privilege to distant speak to them about their memories of VE Day.
“A big thank you to Elvy and Alice for preparing the food, the children and staff from The River Mead for their beautiful art work and for Pauline and June for helping out with the deliveries.
“We look forward to when we can look back and say remember 2020 the year when we had to stay home to keep all safe……..”
