PLANS to use two local red telephone boxes for community projects have been ‘paused’ by the town council.
A decision about the future use of the two telephone boxes – located on Spa Road, opposite Giffords Surgery, and Littlejohn Avenue, next to the Pig and Whistle pub – has been deferred until after the local elections in May.
The telephone boxes were adopted by the town council from BT last year – initial ideas for their use have included using the Spa Road telephone box as an “information hub” for young people, and using the Littlejohn Avenue telephone box for as a space for plants.
It has been suggested that local organisation Young Melksham could be responsible for the Spa Road box, and Melksham’s Bloom team responsible for the Littlejohn Avenue box, with the support of neighbouring residents.
The “pause” will give both groups more time to prepare project plans – explaining how they will run their respective telephone box – to present to the newly elected town council after the 6th May election.
Both telephone boxes will be tidied up and repainted by town council staff in preparation for future projects.
