Putting the brakes on shortcuts into town Campus

Story posted on

TOWN councillors are planning to improve the signage for vehicles accessing Melksham Community Campus, following complaints of vehicles taking shortcuts to access the facility, and speeding.

At the town council’s economic, development and planning meeting, held last month, a representative from the Local Highways and Footpath Improvement Group said, “Traffic is accessing the campus access road via the taxi rank and disabled parking area as a short-cut from King Street. There are no restrictions on access to this area and traffic is frequently proceeding at normal road speed up to the acute left turn to go to the campus.

“Traffic exiting the campus, is usually astride the centre line and comes down the middle of the road towards the roundabout. There have been several near misses that I know about and probably many more that I don’t.”

To improve this issue, the town council resolved to consult the Wiltshire Council highways officer to install two new signs that show; a no-left turn outside Baileys Employment Agency, and a sign that shows no access to Crown House or Melksham Community Campus at the entry to the access to the taxi rank.

The town council will also consult the Wiltshire Council highways officer about installing traffic calming measures, and to improve the signage for traffic exiting the campus.
