MELKSHAM Shed Club was launched last week with around 40 people attending and showing an interest in the club.
The launch evening was held at the Foresters Arms, with the launch deemed a success by Melksham Shed creator Brian Warwick.
He said, “We had a very good response to the launch of the Shed Club, it was good to see quite a number of females taking a keen interest too. We had getting on for 40 people that attended, so that was really good. Here in Melksham we are fortunate enough to have great support for the ‘over 55s’ with the various groups which meet, from music to ‘natter-shops’, as well as a Wiltshire Community Area manager and the Seniors, all aiming to make our lives more worthwhile as we get older.
We would like to add to the above list with a new initiative, which was devised in Australia, and is now in New Zealand, Canada and the UK – called ‘Men’s Sheds’ , but which we will call ‘Melksham Shed.’ The activities in general, seem to be in woodworking, doing furniture repairs/renovation, as well as garden implement repairs and sharpening of tools etc. Inter-generational skill sharing is always high.
“Melksham Shed however, will be not exclusively for men – but will encourage others, including young adults who wish to learn skills from those who have a lifetime of knowledge in using their hands, to create, repair, renovate and build anything from wood, metal or other materials. For this project to be a success and benefit our community support will be needed.”
