New mayor for Melksham

New Mayor, councillor Terri Welch, has pledged to serve the people of Melksham to the best of her ability after taking over the role from cllr Chris Petty. 

She was chosen at the recent annual meeting of Melksham Town Council and becomes mayor for the second time after previously holding the post between 2003 and 2005. She will be aided by the new deputy mayor, cllr Ben Anderson.

Cllr Welch has served the Melksham community for many years having led a group of volunteers in the Tourist Information Centre for 30 years before retiring this year and she has also served on Melksham Town Council for 20 years.

She said, “I am really pleased to have become mayor of a town I love and I intend to serve to the best of my ability. I hope to promote Melksham as much as I can in the role as I am proud of the town I live in.

“I would like to build on the good work done in the town and help continue to grow the unique community spirit that surrounds this town. I would like to see Melksham maintain its economic development and encourage its growth, but to also look after our town and the people and workers who live here.

“There is a lot of exciting things going on in the town such as the community campus and I am particularly passionate about is the Wilts & Berks canal development which I believe will further enhance the town and build on the excellent steps taken by the great people in the town that have helped Melksham grow. If we can make some good strides in bringing the canal closer, that will be fantastic.

“I am also looking forward to this year’s South-West in Bloom competition as it is a real chance to improve the town’s status and build on the success we had last year.”
