WORK is well under way at the former Forest and Sandridge School as gradually the buildings are brought down ready for a new residential area.

Bath Demolition has begun removing parts of the buildings, but were delayed after finding bats in the roof.

An ecological consultant was brought to the site to oversee the demolition, to ensure the bats were safely moved to a nearby bat box.

A new 420-capacity primary school located south of Snarlton Lane was built to replace the 140-year-old Victorian stone school building as it was deemed no longer fit for purpose.

Although a few local people objected to the old school being demolished, Melksham Without Parish Council supported the plans and full permission was granted.

Housing development company Persimmon Homes have bought the land and are due to build houses soon.
