MELKSHAM has won a Silver Gilt Award in the South West in Bloom competition.
This is the third Silver Gilt Melksham has been awarded and with the points getting higher each year, Melksham is getting closer to Gold!
“Judges look for horticultural achievement, cleanliness and community involvement,” said Miriam Zaccarelli, Deputy Town Clerk. “The hundreds of volunteers that help keep Melksham looking great throughout the year demonstrate Melksham’s incredibly strong community spirit which scored highly with the judges. They also made special mention of Shaw School, the Conigre Mead Nature Reserve and Bruce Petty’s garden.
“As well as the main entry, several groups received ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ Awards for specific projects and areas around Melksham. The Bowerhill Residents Action Group received a Level 5: Outstanding Award for their picnic area by the Kennet and Avon Canal and The Bear was a runner-up for the Best Public House in the South West.
“The South West in Bloom Melksham group would like to express their thanks to everyone who helped with the 2016 entry, including volunteers, businesses, schools, and councillors and staff from Melksham Town Council, Melksham Without Parish Council and Wiltshire Council.”
The committee is now busy preparing for the 2017 entry. Plans and ideas will be discussed at the group’s AGM on Wednesday 2nd November at 7pm at Melksham Assembly Hall. Particularly welcome are any groups or clubs who would like to take on any horticultural projects in the next year, and anyone who would like to help keep Melksham looking wonderful all year round.
