MELKSHAM’S new £7million football and rugby ground has been named ‘Oakfields’.
The name was chosen by officials from the two clubs after a competition which saw local people suggest a name for the chance to win £250. Melksham woman Judith Strawson came up with the winning suggestion, which was agreed on by Melksham Town FC and Melksham RFC.
Judith said, “I’m very pleased to have won! I chose the name because of the rural area around the stadium and the old oak trees nearby.”
The ground as a whole will be called Oakfields, the football stand will be named Oakfield Stadium, and the rugby fields are expected to be called Oakfield Park or Oakfield Rec.
Chairman of Melksham Town FC, Dave Wiltshire said, “I think it’s a great name and we’re delighted with it – I wish I’d come up with it myself! I think it’s a name that suits the area and the Oakfield Stadium definitely has a ring to it. There will be a big sign at the entrance to the ground and we’re hoping we’ll be able to put some on the building, too.
“We had a great response of about 60 entries to the competition and it was a good way for us to get the community involved as this will be a facility for the whole of Melksham.”
The final touches are being put on the ground at Woolmore Farm and the clubs are expected to move in in the new year.
