COULD you be a vital link in the community? Melksham and District Link is looking for volunteer Transport Co-ordinators.
The Melksham and District Link is a charity service that drives people to medical appointments across the region, making over 40 trips per week. Their clients include the elderly, less able, and those who cannot drive themselves. Currently, the charity is looking for more people to join the Link team as Transport Co-Ordinators.
No qualifications or experience is required, you just need to have good organisational skills, a friendly and empathetic telephone manner, patience and a little time to spare.
The job title is Transport Co-ordinator and involves taking telephone calls from local members of the public, mostly elderly and vulnerable people who are requesting transport from their own home to hospital, dental, optician and G.P. appointments. You would then telephone an available Link driver from the list of volunteers and then let the client know that it has been arranged.
This job is done on a rotational basis. At the moment there are four people who each do one week at a time but it would be possible to do two or three consecutive days per month, more flexibility could mean more organisers and more organisers would make less work for everyone.
You would be part of a team but work on your own in your own home. A mobile telephone is provided which is passed on to whoever is on duty, along with the diary and necessary paperwork.
This is an indispensable and essential volunteer job as many elderly people are not able to get to hospital on their own and very little help is given by the N.H.S. In 2016 Melksham & District Link fulfilled 1700 journeys proving there is a great need for this valuable voluntary service in our area.
