Town sit top of the table after impressive start to season

MELKSHAM Town have started the season on a high despite losing in the first round of the FA Cup.

Manager Keiran Baggs said, “We did have a disappointing start with the FA Cup first round and the score probably didn’t reflect the performance but we didn’t take the chances, but that’s the nature of a cup tie, you get one chance or you’re out.”

In the first league game of the season, Town played away to Cadbury Heath, winning convincingly 4-0 with goals from Gary Higdon, Warren Maidment, Luke Ballinger and Dan Demkiv.

“Credit to the lads, they didn’t let the FA Cup defeat get them down,” said Keiran. “Their response was fantastic with a 4-0 win followed by another strong away 3-1 against Hallen with goals from Gary Higdon and Luke Ballinger.”

Two days later, Town welcomed Odd Down to the Oakfields and once again were relentless in front of goal with a 3-0 win thanks to a hat-trick from Gary Higdon.

Town now sit at top of the table with nine points from the first three games but manager Keiran Baggs isn’t focusing on the table just yet.

“Of course I’m pleased to be top of the table but I don’t look too much into it. The season is long and we have to take each game as it comes and not get ahead of ourselves.

“The games at the start of the season always come thick and fast but we have a big squad to choose from so despite any injuries we pick up along the way, we have a list of strong players who can step in. It makes my job a bit more difficult but it’s a problem I’d rather have than not have.

“We’ve played very well and have been dominant in all the games. Our back four and keeper have been outstanding so we’ve kept a clean sheet in two of the games as well as being dangerous in front of goal.

“We’ve had great support from the fans as well which is a massive boost, but the lads know they need to repay this loyalty to the fans by putting in a great performance.”
