Abstraction at the Art House Cafe

The three artists exhibiting at the Art House Cafe gallery during March all paint in the abstract style, but their work could not be more different.

After taking early retirement, Roger Marsh returned to college to learn to draw and paint. He says that this greatly enhanced his perception and enjoyment of the visual world and he became increasingly fascinated by similarities of forms appearing both in nature and in the internal world. He likes to leave his work open to the projections of the viewer, hoping that the viewer will become an integral part of the creative process.

Adrian Catchpole is a self-taught artist and his medium is oil on canvas. His style is abstract because he says he is “not good enough” to paint portraits or landscapes. He paints in bright colours using geometric shapes and stripes. His artistic influences are Van Gogh, Picasso, Dali and Magritte.

The third artist this month is newcomer Elisabeth Richardson, whose artistic journey has taken many turns. Although self-taught, she has attended numerous workshops offered by talented and knowledgeable artists, in England and in France (her native country). Her inspiration comes from the colours and forms found in nature, yet the focus is on creating an interaction of lines, shapes, colours and textures in order to produce a dynamic image. She finds this kind of play pleasurable, but her work can also be a way of expressing her mood and emotions.
