Atworth Camera Club’s photographer’s talk

PHOTOGRAPHER Michael Barnes AWPF, came from Cardiff to visit the club on Monday 29th October, to give an interactive introduction to critiquing images.

Alan Lee reports, “He began by asking each member to provide a brief reason why they take photographs, and what it is about them that they find pleasing. The responses covered a very broad range including “something pleasing to the eye”, “a technical challenge”, “capturing the moment”, and many more. Each member of the audience was provided with two prints to study and suggest areas for improvement, which we then discussed in turn.

“Michael then went on to discuss how he approaches critiquing by showing a number of images, asking for suggestions for improvement, and then explaining what he thought was wrong with them. He starts by deciding what it is that he likes about the image and then analyses them for line, shape, form, texture, pattern, colour and space, and finally what he could have done to improve the image. This was a very interactive and thought-provoking discussion.

“Do you have an interest in photography but are not sure what to do next to improve your results? Or are you an experienced photographer with a wealth of knowledge you would like to share? Whatever your level, why not come and join us? There is no formal membership, no commitment, and the monthly fee of £2 includes refreshments. We meet in the Atworth Village Hall at 7.30pm on the last Monday of each month.”
