Melksham osteopath’s Champions League glory (and now he’s hoping for more success with England)

Story posted on

IT’S been an extraordinary few days for local osteopath Carl Todd.

Last week he was part of the Chelsea back room team who won the Champions League. And this week, he has joined up with the England football squad as they prepare for the European Championships.

Carl, who lives in Whitley, and runs Carl Todd Clinics in the town, has been celebrating Chelsea’s historic win in Porto when they overcame pre-match favourites Man City to record an historic 1-0 win.

“What an incredible night; I’m still coming down from an amazing high,” Carl told Melksham News. “We were the underdogs but the lads really stepped up and deserved to win. But it was a real nail-biter, especially those seven minutes of injury time.

“It was just incredible when the final whistle went and we were Champions of Europe!

“The Champions League final is the biggest game in European club football and to come out on top is really, really special. What a game and what a night! And amazing to have the fans there as well.”

Carl celebrated on the pitch with the Chelsea players and afterwards in the changing rooms and at the hotel.” “We had a few drinks!” he said.

But Carl didn’t have long to celebrate as he had to join up with the England squad for the Austria friendly last week ahead of the European Championships which start on 11th June. He is an integral part of the fitness and medical team which includes physios, masseurs, doctors and strength and conditioning specialists.

“With Chelsea, we got to the Champions League final with everyone fit which is what all the back room team work for,” he said.

“With England, there have been a few injury worries and, of course, there has been the added concerns over Covid but we’ve had no positive tests – with Chelsea or England – for several months. Now we’re looking forward to the Euros and hopefully bringing the trophy back to England.

“European Champions at club level and national level, now that would something special!”

There will be no rest for Carl after the Euros as he will be heading off to the Tokyo Olympics, which start on 23rd July, as part of the GB team. “It’s going to be a busy summer, that’s for sure,” he said.

Carl started his osteopathy career in Melksham at Lowbourne Osteopaths 20 years ago before taking over the practice last year with his wife, Mel.

He has been working with the England football team since 2005 – the Euros will be his seventh major tournament with the national team – and he has been at Chelsea since 2008; he was with the club for their previous Champions League finals in 2012 when they beat Bayern Munich and in 2008 when they lost on penalties to Manchester United.

And when he’s not keeping the country’s top sports stars fit, you can find him working alongside the team at Carl Todd Clinics in Melksham, Corsham or Swindon, treating a range of problems and offering effective relief for issues such as back pain, joint pain, headaches and muscular strains.
