LOCAL charity, Age UK Wiltshire, is expanding its services this year as they continue to help older people stay independent at home.
A spokesperson said, “Here at Age UK Wiltshire, we are excited for how we can support older people in Melksham this year. Our goal is to help people stay independent and healthy at home. We do this by supporting older people (and their families and carers) and working alongside other agencies in impactful ways to address financial and practical issues, social isolation, and loneliness.
“Residents in Melksham can access our Information and Advice service for support in combating the rising cost of living this year, with grants for fuel bills and benefits advice. Last year we obtained an incredible £2.3million in eligible benefits identified for older people, so it is important to see what support is available.
“We are also expanding current services, including our hot meals service into the Melksham area, which delivers seven days per week to people who are less able to cook for themselves.
“Helping people to retain and improve their mobility continues to be an important part of our agenda this year. Our Fitness & Friendship (F&F) clubs play a vital role in this, and we are introducing F&F in other towns, based on the successful model we already have in place in Melksham. We received lovely feedback from one attendee who said, ‘The fitness classes are not only useful but great fun with companions and leaders. The biggest plus is that we are not treated like old people.’
“Some people may just want a chat instead and we supported over 100 people with regular Befriending telephone calls last year.
“Thank you to Melksham Town Council and Melksham Without Parish Council for their ongoing support. Our volunteers and donors are the reason we can do such important work in our local communities! If you would like to get involved or use a service, please visit our website.”
