A BY-ELECTION will be held to find a new councillor for Melksham East, following Louisa Lewis’ resignation last month.
Over 10 members of the public were required to request a by-election in writing, or the council would have co-opted someone to fill the vacant seat.
Melksham’s deputy mayor, cllr Tom Price said, “I was extremely sad to see councillor Lewis resign from her post. I did, and still do, hold her in a very high regard and have no doubt she will continue to serve the town regardless of her position with council.
“These will be very big shoes to fill indeed but I am pleased to see this go to a by-election, rather than have the position co-opted in. It is truly a satisfying position to hold and I would encourage anyone wanting to make a change and influence their community to stand, regardless of their political background.”
Louisa Lewis was a Melksham East councillor for two years and resigned recently citing a lack of support from some members of the council and bullying.
The by-election will take place no later than Tuesday 25th July.
