THE new skate park located in King George V playing fields has been covered with spray painted graffiti, but not everyone is upset about it.
To add to the recent increasing reports of vandalism in the area, the new and widely-used skate park has been graffitied with names and references to drug use.
Having only opened in September this year it has not taken long for the artists to strike. However, some local residents of Melksham have commended the act.
Following a ‘The Sham Shout out post’ proclaiming “All the graffiti over the new skatepark just proves what Melksham youth is really like.. so stupid.. and if you put your names all around it, you look even more like an idiots”, people added their opinions and disagreed in the comments of the post.
Laura Cador said, “Graffiti doesn’t make someone any less of a person. They are putting art on a place they use daily. I think it’s good they done this. I haven’t seen it personally so if there is any offensive writing/drawing on there then it’s a bit different. But don’t assume “youths” are bad people because they are doing that”
Katharine Durham added, “Thought skate parks were meant to be graffitied on; rather that than someone’s car or home or something”
The skate park was provided as part of Wiltshire Council’s campus programme in Melksham and allows the local young people the opportunity to access a quality facility without needing to travel. It has been designed to cater for younger skaters and beginners through to more advanced skaters, offering a challenging environment, for all levels.
