MELKSHAM Guides’ Christmas and Charity Fayre raised the sum of £265, which will be donated to Wiltshire Mind, RUH Cancer Centre and Guides.

Rachel Weeks, unit leader said, “We would like to give a big thank you to every one that came and supported us.  The Guides really enjoyed it and are thrilled with the amount of money raised for these charities.

“Thanks again to everyone who has supported us.”

  • Additional pitches approved for Semington travellers’ site More travellers’ pitches are being added to a site in Semington after approval from Wiltshire Council. Greenacres Mobile Park in Littleton, Semington, has been given permission to increase its pitches from 14 to 24. The site sits on the south side of the A361 near West Wilts Crematorium and is home to static and touring caravans. The approval follows a ruling earlier this year to remove non-travellers from the site to prevent overcrowding. The additional pitches are intended to help meet an unmet need for traveller accommodation in Wiltshire.   • Love Melksham Column A resident’s love letters to her town Conigre Mead Nature Reserve This week, my love letter to Melksham is written from the peaceful leafy loveliness of a bench overlooking the river in the Conigre Mead Nature Reserve. This gentle pocket of green gorgeousness, just a couple of minutes’ walk along the river from Sainsbury’s, is a haven of nature, wildlife and wonder. The three-acre plot of land was bought by a group of people and charities led by Dr Ian Cardy in 1988 to be given back to nature. Volunteers planted shrubs and created ponds and with help from the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust and later Lottery funding, the space has become a haven for wildlife, with accessible paths and bridges under the trees so Melksham people can enjoy the beauty of the natural world in Melksham. Today, nearly 40 years after it was created, this abundant green sanctuary is a perfect place to be immersed in the emergence of spring. The rich, earthy smell of new life seeps through everything. Tender new leaves unfurl on every branch, delicate white apple blossom petals flutter in the air and the velvety catkins of the goat willow hang in clusters over the bridge. It’s a wonderful exercise in mindfulness to notice all the colours: bright yellow aconites by the path, tiny purple ground ivy flowers on the footbridge and every possible shade of green all around.   • Report slams council housing firm over debt and failure to build By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison A new report has blasted a Wiltshire Council-owned housing company, saying it is £4 million in debt and has failed to build a single house in six years. Wiltshire Council set up two “arm’s length” property companies in 2019. Stone Circle Development Company was created to build and acquire homes, while Stone Circle Housing Company rents homes to key workers, refugees, and those at risk of homelessness. The interim report by Wiltshire Council’s Stone Circle task group criticised an ongoing lack of scrutiny, saying important meetings were held behind closed doors. Presenting the report to the council’s Overview and Scrutiny Management Committee, task group chairman Cllr Gerry Murray said, “This report does not make comfortable reading for anyone.   • Melksham bypass decision due ‘early summer’ A decision on the Melksham bypass is expected in early summer as uncertainty remains over its funding and future. Wiltshire Council says it received confirmation at the end of March from the Department for Transport that a decision on the A350 Melksham Bypass is expected to be announced in early summer. The council’s preferred route for the bypass, running east of Melksham and around Bowerhill, was consulted on in 2021. The update comes as the Government has published its Road Investment Stra-tegy 3 (RIS3), setting out national road investment plans for the period to 2031. The document makes no specific reference to a bypass at Melksham and includes no funding commitment for the scheme. However, the strategy backs the findings of the M4 to Dorset Coast Strategic Study, which confirmed the A350 as the preferred route for traffic between the M4 and the south coast and outlines potential improvements to the route. Wiltshire Council has reallocated £10million from this year’s budget that had been set aside for the bypass scheme while it waits for news from the Department for Transport on moving the project forward.   • Bowerhill scouts tackle 12-hour hiking challenge Scouts from Bowerhill completed a gruelling 12-hour hiking challenge recently, developing their map reading and navigation skills. Two teams from 1st Bowerhill Scouts completed the TrekQuinox Challenge in Bath, starting at Cleeve Hill Campsite at 6pm on Saturday 21st March and finishing at 6pm on Sunday 22nd March. The challenge sees teams attempt to hike 20 miles in 12 hours before the sun comes up. One of the teams completed 17 miles, with the other team hiking 18 miles. 1st Bowerhill scout leader Neal Brookes said, “The initial thing is making sure they are aware of what they are actually carrying on a hike and what they would need against what they don’t actually need.   • Plans for four houses on former Bath Road car park Proposals to build four houses on a former Cooper Tires overspill car park on Bath Road have been submitted. The application by Melksham Development Company proposes the construction of four semi-detached houses with gardens and parking on land between 83 and 91 Bath Road. The land served as an overspill car park for the former Cooper Tires factory, which closed in December 2023 after 112 years in the town. Melksham Town Council has supported the plans as part of the long-term regeneration of the brownfield site. At the council’s recent Economic Development and Planning Meeting, Chair Cllr Saffi Rabey said, “This first planning application marks a significant moment for the future of the former Cooper Tires site. The council recognises the importance of this area to residents, both historically and as a key opportunity for sustainable growth.   • Broughton Gifford business boosts logistics with European network A Broughton Gifford logistics company is celebrating its first year as part of Europe’s largest express palletised freight network, bringing advanced transport services to businesses across Wiltshire.   • Town council to take over Campion Drive sports field Melksham Town Council has agreed to take over the lease of a sports field at Campion Drive, aiming to bring the site back into regular community use. Councillors made the unanimous decision at a meeting of the authority’s Finance Committee last month, agreeing to take on responsibility for the field from Wiltshire Council. The site, located in the Melksham South area just off Cornflower Way, has largely been unused in recent years. The town council is now planning to lease the space to Future of Football to provide an additional area for running football sessions for young people.   • Region’s largest photography fair is back The South West’s largest camera and photography fair is returning this month to the Cheese and Grain. The Frome Wessex Camera and Photographic Fair will be held at the venue on Sunday 19th April, with over 30 stands selling all things camera and photography-related. Organisers say, “There will be cameras both digital and modern, collectable, lenses, filters, flashguns, film, paper, books and old prints. “If you’ve never been to a photographic camera fair, you’re missing a treat. The prices are low and you’ll find cameras, lenses and lots of other photographic accessories that you’ve been searching for. “Camera fairs are very friendly places and the stallholders will be pleased to give help and technical assistance on cameras and photographic equipment."
