Swimming club celebrates 60 years

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the swimming club in Melksham and plans are in place for a big celebration next month.

“Over the past 60 years, there have been many changes both to personnel and to its training facilities,” reports the club. “And hopefully in the near future there will be more changes with the new pool planned for Melksham. 

“Plans are progressing well for our 60th celebration evening on Saturday 22nd June, so please look out for details. The MASC Facebook page will be updating things on a regular basis or you can contact a committee member for more details.

“The club is going through a very strong period at present, with the largest number of swimmers going to the counties this year and for many years we have had a strong representation at the regionals. 

“Our swimmers have represented  the club in Division One for the Winter League and Division Two for the Summer League galas, and add to this, the increasing number of swimmers going to ‘open meets’; it is clear things are going in the right direction. 

“We have a very strong and dedicated committee which lead the club and an ever-increasing waiting list of swimmers looking to join us. In order for the club to progress, we are at a point where we urgently need to develop our poolside team and judges for galas. We have 6 ½ hours of pool time each week which is used for teach to swim sessions as well as coaching sessions for the swim squads. In order for this to continue we need  to have people qualified at Level 2 and we are seeking people who have this qualification, or people prepared to be trained to this level, to come forward to offer some of their time to help our club.

“With the increase in numbers going to meets, we also have to supply judges and timekeepers; again we are getting short of these and need to get people trained to the required level in order to continue to support our swimmers at these events. If your child swims at these events, why not train as a judge so that you can be on the poolside whilst they swim, you would be close to the action and supporting your club at the same time.
