MELKSHAM Community Meals at the Assembly Hall is hoping to expand its service from two days a week to three.
The service launched in February this year, replacing the Melksham Lunch Club, which was axed by Wiltshire Council in December last year. Melksham Community Meals is open to everyone in the town and surrounding villages, offering a place for people to meet and socialise.
The service normally runs on Fridays and Sundays at lunchtime at the Assembly Hall, but Sue Mortimer, who led the campaign to reinstall the service, is hoping to expand to three days a week, offering lunch on Wednesdays.
Sue told Melksham News, “It’s going well – the last few Sundays have been a great success. But if we are to remain at the Assembly Hall, which is our preferred venue, we could do with more people attending.
“The feedback we have been receiving from customers has been good – they tell us that we are doing a grand job, that the meals are good. Some even say that we give them too much food! And we have a dedicated team of volunteers that keep the service going – we couldn’t do it without them.
“Looking ahead, we would like to start a regular Wednesday service, but we need more help to cover our costs. So we are applying for grants to help cover the cost of renting the Assembly Hall – we should find out if we have been successful later in the year.”
Speaking to Melksham News at a lunch service last week, visitors from the Lacock Evergreens Club said, “Melksham Community Meals is very important – it’s a chance for people to get together – we often see people that we know who we haven’t seen for a while.
“You always get a well-cooked meal and never leave feeling hungry. It has a nice community feel.”
Upcoming dates for Melksham Community Meals are; Friday 21st June, Wednesday 26th June, Friday 28th June, Sunday 30th June.
Meals are served from 12pm until 2pm. Everyone is welcome and meals start from £5.
Bookings are advisable but not essential. Call the Assembly Hall on 01225 709887 or Sue Mortimer on 07719 935 883.
