Melksham’s great start continues

August 19, 2020

Melksham Cricket Club continued their great start to the season with a well-earned 82-run win over Corsham 3s, with the batters doing well to negotiate what was at times a difficult 1st innings, before the bowlers produced yet another frugal display to see the side home.

Winning the toss and opting to bat, the first over of the contest almost ended in calamity for Melksham when openers Matthew Hunt and Daniel Carpenter were involved in a chaotic mix-up ,which saw the latter narrowly survive two run-out attempts in the same ball. This incident would prove to be an anomaly in what was otherwise a very uneventful first 10 overs. Both batsmen were content to simply block out the opening bowlers, hoping that the searing heat would take its toll on their opponents first. The run-rate did begin to pick up by the end of the early stages of the innings, and by the 15th over, Melksham were on a solid – albeit not spectacular – 43 for no loss.

The game began to change dramatically after the early drinks break however, with Melksham suffering a top-order collapse to hand the initiative to Corsham. First to go were openers Hunt (11) and Carpenter (24), dismissed in successive overs after being caught. Things quickly got even worse when Number 3 batsman Ross Holbrook (2) suffered the same fate just balls later. When Russell Collins was also removed in the same manner for 6, Melksham found themselves in the extremely dangerous position of 74-4.

It was up to Joe Veacock to play a captain’s innings to turn the tide back in his side’s favour. Ably assisted by Freddie Honeybone, Veacock happily bided his time in the middle, gradually accumulating enough runs to steer Melksham away from trouble and whilst keeping wickets in hand heading into the last 10 overs. Honeybone would go on to be caught-behind on 11 to leave the score on 101-5 after 34 overs, with Sean Hooper trapped LBW for a duck soon after; but after what had been a tricky middle-period of the innings for the home side, the runs finally started to flow more freely. Veacock finally reached a hard-fought fifty, in the end departing for 57, whilst a late blast from Chris Singh (28*) as well as contributions from Mark Mullis (12) and Matt Lee (9*) saw Melksham home to a solid score of 184-9; a good effort from the hosts after what was an excellent performance from Corsham both with the ball and in the field.

Despite having a healthy target to defend, the bowlers were nevertheless determined to keep things tight in the early stages of Corsham’s reply. The impressive opening duo of Matt Lee and Liam Merrett duly delivered, with Lee producing an especially relentless opening burst to take 2 wickets, remarkably conceding just 1 run in his 6 over spell: appearing to be practically unplayable.

Corsham were subsequently left floundering 15-2 after 11 overs, and their afternoon got no better when Chris Singh was then introduced into the attack and proceeded to eviscerate the rest of the top order with 3 wickets in his first 4 overs. Freddie Honeybone also produced a decent display with the ball and was unlucky to finish his 6 over spell wicketless, having gone for 19 runs. Come the 20th over of the innings, Corsham were all but down-and-out on 43-5.

The second half of the innings proved to be something of a dour affair, with Corsham mostly happy to just see off the Melksham bowlers to frustrate their efforts to claim all 10 wickets. Mark Mullis ensured his side was still in the hunt for wickets with a spell of 3-23 off 9, whilst Ross Holbrook also made an important contribution in the field with two catches.

With the overs beginning to fizzle away, Liam Merrett and Matt Lee were brought back into the attack in an attempt to finish the job off. Merrett was able to claim one tail-end wicket, but in the end both he and Lee, as well as Veacock were unable to take the final wicket; with Melksham once again having the settle for only the 9 dismissals despite restricting their opposition to a low total for a second week running. Despite this, Melksham can still look upon the start of their league campaign with great satisfaction and will hope to continue to good work next week with the visit of Chippenham 3s.

It was unfortunately a different story for the 2s, who lost their local derby against Lacock 2s in what was a low scoring thriller. The side were unable to exorcise the batting demons of the previous weekend, falling for a meagre 81 all out off 26.3 overs in the 1st innings.

They did continue their fine form with the ball though; Chris Long (3-22 off 9) and Tom Watling (4-36 off 8) leading the charge to make sure the run-chase was not a formality for Lacock. In the end the home-side saw themselves home with just 2 wickets to spare. The 2s will hope to finally get off the mark for the season with a trip to Spye Park 2s next weekend.

  • Church bells ring out to mark historic project

New bells have been added to a Melksham church, marking the completion of one of the tower’s most significant projects.

The peal at St Michael’s Church has been expanded from eight to ten bells and was recently dedicated by the Rt Revd Andrew Rumsey shortly before leaving the Diocese. The bells were first rung together as a full ring of ten in January, with a dedication service held last month. The first quarter peal on the new bells was rung later that evening.

Plans to increase the number of bells were first discussed more than 20 years ago but gained momentum following the coronation of King Charles III and the centenary of the current bells, which were cast in 1924.

Ringers wrote to the Palace to ask if the Royal Cypher of King Charles III could be included on two new bells. Bell-ringer Chris Bush said, “We were told that we could incorporate the Royal Cypher as long as the order to cast the bells was placed in the year of the coronation.”

  • Love Melksham Column: A resident’s love letters to her town

The Tourist Information Centre

This week’s love for Melksham comes from the hub of helpful happiness that is the Melksham Tourist Information Centre (TIC).

Although the name suggests it’s for visitors, the centre is a valuable resource for everyone in Melksham, with a surprising range of services, signposting and even souvenirs for sale.

The TIC is just opposite the Post Office on Church Street, and crammed with every possible leaflet, map, book and brochure about the area. It’s an excellent hub of community connection and advice. There are bus timetables and maps, tickets and tips for every type of transport and tourism, as well as a popular section of secondhand books and jigsaws for sale, locally made honey, cards and crafts and a gallery of local artwork. When I have friends visiting, I like to make sure we pop in to pick up some unique Melksham merch of magnets, mugs or tea towels to celebrate our lovely town. If the queue at the Post Office is too long, it’s great to remember the TIC also sell stamps!

With the vibrant social calendar of Melksham at their fingertips the volunteers are a source of wisdom on what to do in and around town – from theatre shows and Rock’n’Roll dances to Historical Society talks and comedy nights and you can get tickets for Melksham Open Gardens, the Choral Society, Melksham Music and Drama performances and the Garden and Produce Show.

  • Pupils raise over £3,000 in marathon challenge

Pupils have raised over £3,000 for their school by completing 307 laps, the equivalent of 7.3 marathons of Broughton Gifford Common.

Children at St Mary’s Primary School in Broughton Gifford completed as many 1km laps of the Common as they could last month during the school’s first-ever ‘Mary-thon’.

They raised £3,363 in total, which will go towards enhancing the school’s garden to bring additional sensory elements into the space to make it even more welcoming and engaging, especially for children with special educational needs. New wildlife and play features will also be added.

A member of the school’s PTA group, Charlotte Godsiffe, said, “This is a huge achievement for our small school and the event raised an astonishing amount. It was a beautiful sunny day and after a thorough warm up directed by the professional fitness coach Francisco Mora of Rustiq Fitness, the village turned out to cheer the children on.

  • Fundraiser launched for green space maintenance

Volunteers who care for Shurnhold Fields in Melksham have launched a fundraiser to pay for tools and ongoing maintenance.

The Friends of Shurnhold Fields aim to raise £2,000 to help them continue projects and planting at the open space on Dunch Lane.

The group’s work includes mowing paths, planting native trees and hedgerows and carrying out essential pruning and maintenance.

Volunteer Andrew Newman said, “Since we first started, we have grown over 200 trees from saplings donated to us by the Woodland Trust and created a World War I memorial area with each tree representing a lost son of Melksham and the local villages. Further trees have been planted around the fields to enhance the look as well as help with the biodiversity. A small orchard of endangered fruit trees has also been planted along with several memorial trees.

“We have been fortunate to have received support from other organisations, including Knorr-Bremse. Seating, rubbish bins and a picnic area have also been provided in conjunction with the local councils as well as a large stone donated by local company Sahara Melksham.

  • Community figures honoured at Buckingham Palace garden parties

Melksham community figures have attended Buckingham Palace garden parties in recognition of their work.

The Mystery of Spero Lodge

What does Masonic Lodge No 6825 in Essex have to do with Melksham Hospital on Spa Road

The first was consecrated on 20th April 1949; the latter was declared open by the Marquess of Bath on 27th July 1938. Is this clue any help with the answer? No?

How about the name “Spero”, which in Latin means “I Hope”. Got the reference now?

Even if I help you with an answer, you’re still not going to get it.

They are both contained in Spero Lodge. Actually, that’s not quite true. The answer, unless someone very clever does know, is that I can find no relation except for the name “Spero” and even then, dear readers, you are probably still scratching your head.

Spero aliquem mihi dicere posse.

Translation: “I hope someone can tell me.”

  • Tributes paid to Melksham rugby player

Tributes have been shared for a long-standing player at Melksham Rugby Club who has died aged 42.

Phil Stone died suddenly on Wednesday 20th May. He had been a member of Melksham Rugby Club for 18 years and was described as a ‘multi-talented’ player, having a playing career spanning the 1st team through to coaching.

His children Gwion, 18, and Addien, 16, have launched a fundraiser to help cover funeral costs.

They said, “Our dad was a funny man. He lit up every room he walked into. His laugh could be heard from miles away and we still hear it as if he were still with us.

“We miss his sarcasm and his constant jokes. He always said what he wanted and was never afraid to say it loud and clear. He loved a crowd and attention and we want to be able to give him that one last time.”
