Melksham pays its respects to Duke of Edinburgh

MELKSHAM’S two councils have been leading the tributes in the town following the death of Prince Philip.

Melksham Town’s Mayor, Councillor Pat Aves said, “The people of Melksham send their deepest condolences to Her Majesty The Queen and all members of the Royal Family on this saddest of days.  His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was an inspiration to us all, and his was a life well lived.  We join the nation in mourning his death.”

Chair of Melksham Without Parish Council, cllr Richard Wood, said, “On behalf of Melksham Without Parish Council and all our parishioners I would like to express deep sympathy to HRH Queen Elizabeth on the death of Prince Philip.

“He was a remarkable public servant for 73 years, being a great support to the Queen as Monarch while also playing a major part in the modernisation of the Royal family and its role in all our lives.

“I know from first-hand experience that his far-sighted Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme played a major role for many pupils at George Ward School, and latterly at Melksham Oak, opening up many new experiences for them. Our thoughts and sympathies go out to all members of the Royal family at this sad time.”

As a mark of respect, during the period of Royal mourning, the Union Flag will fly at half-mast over the Town Hall.

The town council has set up a station at the front of the Town Hall where residents may take an insert from their physical condolence book home with them to complete and return.  Responses will later be bound together.  The station will be available 10am to 4pm between Monday and Friday.

Wiltshire Council has an online book of condolence which will remain open until the day after the funeral; you can sign it by visiting www. wiltshire.gov. uk/registration-service/royal-memorial-events/hrh-prince-philip/book-of-condolence-for-hrh-prince-philip

Duke’s Melksham visit remembered

A spokesperson for the town council continues, “Here in Melksham, we welcomed the Duke to the town on 14 April 1961, on the occasion of his visit to the, then Avon Rubber Company, now Cooper Tires.  Arriving by helicopter, the Duke commented on a most enjoyable visit and his amazement at the complicated processes. With inclement weather forecast, special umbrellas were acquired for the day, even though the weather for the visit stayed fine and they were not used.  If you still have one, kept as a souvenir, we’d love a photograph!

“In his visit to our town, the Duke was following in the  footsteps of his grandparents, King George V and Queen Mary, who visited Melksham in 1917.  His mother, Princess Alice, visited Melksham too, during the Second World War.

“Much has been said about the impact the Duke had on young people through the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme – a programme he founded, that is thriving today, here in Melksham, at the town’s Melksham Oak Community School.

“Through the programme, young people have fun, make friends, improve their self-esteem and build confidence. They gain essential skills and attributes for work and life such as resilience, problem-solving, team-working, communication and drive, all of which enhance their CVs, further and higher education and job applications.

“The strength of character that was gained by thousands of participants, locally and internationally, is a proud legacy for a man who believed wholeheartedly in the importance of developing self-reliance and courage in our young people.  After all, they are our future.

“Older generations will remember him as the dashing young prince – while the younger generations may remember him more as a symbolic grandfather, from a different time and with a twinkle of mischief in his eye.

“The Duke’s passing, leaves an immense void that will be felt by Her Majesty The Queen and other members of the Royal family.  Their grief is the nation’s grief.”

“The news of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh’s death on Friday was not entirely unexpected.  However, for many, the news still came as a jolt.

“Just weeks from his centennial, and after a lengthy stay in hospital earlier this year, The Duke passed away peacefully at Windsor Castle, with his beloved wife, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by his side.

“Prince Philip was a mass of contradictions.  Born in Corfu and raised under a number of different influences, the young Prince lived an unusual and nomadic life-style, yet it is hard to think of anyone who defined ‘Britishness’ quite so quintessentially.  Full of energy, intellect and humour,  the Duke is said to have completed roughly 300 solo engagements per year, until his 90s.

  • Council urges residents to cut back overgrown vegetation

Melksham Town Council is asking residents to help keep the town’s footpaths and pavements clear by trimming back any trees, hedges or shrubs that overhang public paths.

The appeal comes after reports of vegetation obstructing public walkways in several areas of the town.

The council hopes that residents checking and maintaining vegetation around their properties will help prevent minor issues from becoming larger obstructions and ensure public routes remain accessible.

Cllr Saffi Rabey said, “We have recently received a number of reports from residents about trees, hedges and bushes overhanging pavements and public footpaths.

  • Love Melksham Column: A resident’s love letters to her town

Park Yoga

This week, my love letter to Melksham is written from the sunny expanse of King George V Playing Field, in the peaceful presence that follows Park Yoga.

If you’ve been in the park on a Sunday morning in the summer, you may have seen people heading purposefully across the grass with yoga mats and water bottles. They arrange themselves near two friendly women in green T-shirts next to a fluttering green feather flag, inviting you to this week’s free session of Park Yoga.

This morning, as people arrived from every direction and rolled out their pink and purple mats, I was aware that I didn’t look as yoga-ready as most of them but I was also aware that this is a welcoming, non-judgmental space. Friendly smiles and nods of recognition were shared by a growing crowd of women, men and a handful of children, filling up this side of the field.

  • Are young people in Wiltshire facing barriers to employment?

By Megan Robinson, on work experience with Melksham News

A recent government review led by former health secretary Alan Milburn found that around one in eight people aged 18 to 24 are not in education, employment or training (NEET).

The findings have prompted debate about the barriers young people face when trying to find work and gain experience.

While on work experience with Melksham News, 17-year-old Megan Robinson spoke to recruiters, employers and a university student to explore whether young people in Wiltshire are facing similar challenges.

Recruiters say a lack of experience remains one of the biggest barriers for young jobseekers.

Sharon Chapman, managing director of Melksham-based New Resource Recruitment, said many young people are struggling to secure work in a difficult jobs market.

  • New provider takes over waste collections

Household waste and recycling collections in Wiltshire are now being delivered by a new provider.

Wiltshire Council has moved to a Local Authority Trading Company (LATC) model, with collections now carried out by Ubico, a company owned by local authorities which already provides environmental services across Gloucestershire and West Oxfordshire.

The household waste and recycling collection service was previously provided by Hills Waste Solutions for the past eight years.

The council says residents will continue to receive the same collections as usual, with no changes to collection days, frequencies or crews.

  • Research reveals Melksham link to forgotten England rugby player

A rugby historian researching a new book has solved a mystery that remained unsolved for more than 150 years, discovering that a long-forgotten England international was born in Melksham.

Phil Hill was researching the lives of England rugby players for his book, The Lives of England Rugby Players 1871-1899, when he began investigating the identity of Robert Henry Fowler, whose details had remained uncertain in official records.

The Rugby Football Union’s records listed the player only as either Robert or Richard Henry Fowler, born in 1859.

Newspaper reports described him simply as “a heavy, powerful forward” who played for Leeds and Yorkshire, while some historians mistakenly identified him as the son of a Watford postman.

Phil’s research has now established that the player was Robert Henry Fowler, born in Melksham on 6th February 1851 and the son of MP Robert Fowler.

Sam and Katy Gooding will continue to lead the team, and the business will carry on operating from its existing Wiltshire offices in Warminster, Melksham and Trowbridge. Clients will still be dealt with by the same team, offering the same outstanding service they have come to expect.

  • Plans unveiled for 200-home Berryfield development

Proposals for a 200-home development on land between Semington Road and Berryfield Lane have been unveiled as developers prepare to submit a planning application later this summer.

Bellway Homes presented the proposals at a public consultation held at Berryfield Village Hall last month, where residents were invited to view the plans and provide feedback.

The proposed development would cover around 11 hectares. The site includes three agricultural fields, together with previously developed land containing dilapidated Second World War-era buildings and land currently occupied by chicken sheds.
