Avonside’s street food ‘concept’ to run until end of May

THE weekly street food “concept” at Avonside, SCOFF Pop-Up, will run until the end of May.

Bringing a diverse range of global street food to Avonside, SCOFF Pop-Up kicked off on Thursday April 8th for an initial four-week run, which was recently extended until Friday May 28th thanks to its huge success. Running on Thursday and Friday evenings, the pop-up’s offering changes each night on a rotational basis.

Organisers say, “SCOFF Pop-Up hosts some of the South West’s most exciting street food traders serving up delicious food including smashed beef, lamb or falafel juicy burgers with sides from Boigers, Alpine raclette and tartiflette from Raclette Raclette, and buttermilk fried chicken sando with a signature sauce served in a brioche bun from Los Hermanos.”

Sophie Bowden, the creator of SCOFF Pop-up, adds, “We’ve had a wonderful reception at SCOFF Pop-Up, Avonside, with people turning up on foot, bike and by car to get a taste of the incredible array of street food we have on offer.

“The atmosphere has been great, with plenty of people ordering as a Thursday or Friday night takeaway treat for the whole family.”

Traders are ready to serve from 5pm until 8pm, or sell-out. The street food traders joining the line-up for SCOFF at Avonside over future weeks will be announced weekly on the SCOFF and Avonside social media channels, alongside special deals.

SCOFF Pop-Up offers a safe, takeaway service with Covid measures in place including hand sanitiser on the stalls, contactless payment and social distancing in place. Visitors to SCOFF at Avonside can park for free on site.

The tie-up with SCOFF Pop-Up forms part of a vision for Avonside, by owners Create Real Estate, to make the most the town centre location and riverside setting to create a vibrant quarter for both leisure and business.

Ricky Humphreys, director at Create Real Estate, which owns Avonside, said, “We are thrilled that Melksham has given SCOFF Pop-Up such a brilliant welcome. It’s the start of exciting things to come for Avonside where our vision is to create a destination for people to relax and socialise by the riverfront, enjoy amazing food and buy artisan produce.

“We would really like to hear from other pop-ups, unique concepts like SCOFF, exciting start-ups or already established independents offering great quality food and drink that are interested in being part of this journey.”

  • Council calls on Government to rethink Melksham bypass decision

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

Someone is killed or seriously injured on a notorious stretch of the A350 roughly once every 11 weeks, a senior councillor has said, as Wiltshire Council demands the Government rethink its decision to ditch funding for the Melksham bypass. During an emergency debate at full council on Tuesday 20th October, councillors overwhelmingly backed a motion condemning the decision and demanding continued investment in the key north-south route. They also called for the more than £500,000 the council has spent developing the scheme to be refunded.

  • Gompels submits detailed plans for new warehouse

Gompels has taken another step towards building its new warehouse in Melksham after submitting a detailed design of the scheme to Wiltshire Council. The reserved matters application covers the scale, layout, appearance, landscaping and access for the proposed development on land south of the A365 Bath Road and west of Turnpike Garage. It follows outline planning permission being granted earlier this year for the warehouse and office development, which the company says will be a major investment in the town and create hundreds of jobs.

The history of Melksham’s former RAF station is being brought to life in a new book exploring its role in training thousands of service personnel during the Second World War and beyond. Rob began researching the history while working with Melksham Remembers, a local history group. “It became clear that while thousands of airmen and airwomen trained and lived at RAF Melksham from its opening in 1940, its existence is rapidly fading from the community
