Southern League Div. One
Saturday 30th Sept,
Bideford 3 – 1 Melksham Town
Tuesday 26th Sept
Hamworthy Utd 1 – 1 Melksham Town
TOWN will be looking to get their play-off push back on track this week after dropping points in two away games at Bideford and Hamworthy at the end of September.
Town travelled to Bideford, on Saturday 30th September and went down 3-1 to the North Devon side, reports club chairman Darren Perrin.
Town missed a great chance to take the lead after only two minutes when Ben Brooks shot wide when well placed. On what was a very difficult pitch and where the grass was above your boots, both sides struggled to play any attractive football.
However, in the 26th minute Town took the lead as Joe Porton got on the end of a quickly taken free kick to fire home. The Bideford keeper then made a great save from Ralph Graham just before the interval to keep the lead to just one.
The second half was a disaster for Town. We were poor in all departments and were outrun and outfought all over the pitch. However, the first goal was definitely ‘offside’ and the Town never recovered and it was no surprise when Bideford scored two more goals to deserve their victory.
The day went from bad to worse near the end when defender Deon Molinuex was sent off for a poor challenge.
Point at Hamworthy
The Town then travelled to play at Hamworthy at Weymouth’s ground in what unfortunately proved to be Hamworthy’s last ever fixture, as they withdraw from the Southern League with immediate effect due to crippling costs. Town played well on the night to draw 1 – 1. We again took the lead through Ben Brooks but the Dorset side with 20 minutes to go. Town nearly snatched victory in the last minute as captain Sam Hendy hit the post.
Despite the disappointing results, Town still lie fifth in the league with 12 points from seven games, nine points off the leaders Willand Rovers but with two games in hand.
• This coming Saturday the Town play their first home game since mid-September against Yate Town, kick off 3pm. We urge the people of Melksham to come out and support the club as we look to maintain our position in the play offs.
