Three teenagers arrested following arson in town centre

LOCAL police have arrested three youths in connection with an arson incident in which damage was caused to the public toilets, litter bin and the Christmas tree in the Market Place earlier this month.

The Melksham Christmas Lights Group confirmed that £1,200 worth of damage was caused, including damage to electrical equipment under the town’s Christmas tree while Melksham Town Council say around £1,000 of further damage was caused to the toilets and bin.

In a statement, Melksham Town Council said, “We are aware of the damage caused by an arson attack in our public toilets. Not only is this costly in time and money to repair, but it is also a huge inconvenience to the public. There was also damage to a bin, which was set alight. We are thankful to the fire brigade who attended the scene and put the fire out. We are still investigating; however, we estimate costs in time and materials will be around £1,000.”

A statement from Wiltshire Police said, “Between approximately 3:30am and 4:15am on 7th January, the public toilets in Market Place were set on fire, as well as various bins. CCTV enquiries were carried out and our investigation has been ongoing. Over the weekend, we arrested a 15-year-old boy and two 16-year-old boys from Melksham, on suspicion of arson. They have been interviewed and released on bail while enquiries continue.”

Inspector Andy Lemon said, “This type of behaviour will not be tolerated; such disrespect for your home town is unacceptable and has a significant negative impact on a local community. Enquiries are ongoing, and we will keep local residents updated with further progress.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident should call 101 and quote crime reference number 54240009139. Alternatively, call CrimeStoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
