Smart wristbands to help find missing people with dementia

Smart wristbands to help find missing people with dementia

SMART wristbands designed to help find missing people with dementia more quickly are now being rolled out to the public.

The hi-tech bands are a result of a collaboration between Wiltshire Police and its partners, the office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), the Wiltshire Bobby Van, Alzheimer’s Support, and Carer Support Wiltshire.

They will be distributed to those who are identified as needing them via the Wiltshire Bobby Van, Alzheimer’s Support and Carer Support Wiltshire.

The wristbands, which were the brainchild of Avon and Somerset Police and first launched in their area in 2015, contain a micro-chip, and carers or family members will load it with key information about the wearer, including their name, age and town or village they are from as well as next of kin details like their name and phone number.

The bands can be scanned by a smart phone and the information on the chip will then be displayed on that phone; you don’t need an app to scan the band.  If the wearer is found by a member of the public and appears lost or vulnerable, that member of the public can scan the band and contact the noted next of kin. The wristbands do not contain a GPS tracker, nor an alarm and are not a replacement for calling 999.

Angharad Caton, missing persons co-ordinator with Wiltshire Police, said, “The purpose of the wristbands is to improve the way people with dementia are found. Anyone who finds a person in distress or appearing lost wearing one of these new bands can help reunite that person with their carers and loved ones quickly.

“We hope, with the help of these bands, anyone who goes missing will be found quicker and returned home safely with minimal police interaction. However, they are not a replacement for friends and families contacting us if a loved one goes missing and you are concerned for their welfare. Our officers and staff are also aware of the new bands and know what to do if they find someone wearing one.”

Leanne Hubbard, CEO of Carer Support Wiltshire, said, “Carer Support Wiltshire are delighted to have helped produce these wristbands, which we know will bring extra peace of mind to those who are caring for someone living with dementia. Being a carer can be hard and carers not only carry out day-to-day tasks for the person they look after, but often carry a lot of worry about that person and all the ‘what ifs’.

“These wristbands, which will be offered free of charge to all the carers we support who are caring for someone living with dementia, will help reunite people quickly should the worst happen and the person they care for wanders or gets lost.”

For more information and to access a referral form, please go to the Wiltshire Police website and search dementia safeguarding wristbands.

  • Local group has fun with themed session

A singing group in Melksham recently held a ‘Ladies’ Day at the Races’ themed session, giving members the chance to have fun and wear smart clothes.

Members of the Singin’ Group attended their weekly meeting at the Riverside Centre, where they sang horse-related songs, including The Blaydon Races and Delaney’s Donkey. They also took part in a raffle, with prizes and rosettes awarded to the winners.

Any funds raised on the day went back into the group.

“Fun is our mantra,” said organiser Jeanette Nash. “We do various themes throughout the year. We try to vary them as much as possible. For St Andrew’s Day at the end of November, we will have a Scottish theme: tartan. We will wear kilts, sing Scottish songs and eat shortbread."

  • Melksham Times Past

A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis
Battito di un Poliziotto

(Il Vello d’Oro is Italian for The Golden Fleece, the same “Fleece Inn” and located in Shaw on Folly Lane).

Oh those days when we had bobbies on patrol and they knew everyone in town.

I’m not sure I pine for the 19th century, other than being a fly on the wall but those were the days that defined community. Nowadays we rarely know our local police by name and complaints tend to be discussed on Facebook rather than directly dealt with.

Here is just one report of a drunken incident that happened at closing time outside the Fleece.

  • Lions donate raffle funds to air ambulance

Fundraisers in Melk-sham have donated £1,500 to the Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance Charity.

The Melksham Lions Club presented a cheque to a member of the charity, Dave Martin, last month.

Funds were raised in the Lions’ annual Easter hamper raffle, where residents purchased raffle tickets at participating businesses to be in with the chance of winning a hamper of Easter treats and chocolate.

Director of the club, Paul Carter, said, “Thank you once again to all the sponsors, shops and of course you the public for taking part.”

  • Love Melksham – A resident’s love letters to her town

Eight years ago, two talented Melksham friends decided to take a leap of faith and create something lovely for Melksham.

Nicola and Sarah, a pair of enterprising artists, had met at the cosy gathering of crafters that started at the Littlebrook Centre in 2017. Inspired to showcase local arts and crafts, they approached the town council for help in using the Market Place for a monthly celebration of local creativity. With permissions and paperwork managed by the town council, they gathered together 11 other crafty people, and on a Saturday in 2019 - despite torrential rain, which meant the market was temporarily relocated into the town hall - the Melksham Makers’ Market was launched.

With Nicola’s beautiful, crocheted pieces and Sarah’s splendid sewing as staples of the market, this relatively small gathering of gazebos full of goodies has expanded over the years to become a regular monthly market of up to 25 stalls of knitted, painted, sculpted, welded, carved and baked goods.

  • Melksham woman’s leukaemia journey inspires charity skydive

A Melksham resident is taking on a 15,000ft skydive to help others facing blood cancer after no matching adult stem cell donor could be found for her during treatment for leukaemia.

Lisa Coldwell is preparing for the tandem skydive on 22nd August at Old Sarum, near Salisbury, to raise money for DKMS, a charity that recruits stem cell donors and supports patients in need of transplants.

Lisa was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in 2019 and needed a stem cell transplant. However, no matching adult donor could be found anywhere in the world, so she received stem cells from umbilical cord blood donated by two babies in France and Germany.

“It was a bit of a weird one when I had the actual transplant,” said Lisa. “Luckily it worked because if it had not, I wouldn’t have had any options. Essentially, I just feel that there needs to be more people on the database and it obviously costs them, so I wanted to help.”

  • Pupils show support for classmate with cystic fibrosis

Children at a local primary school marked Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Day in support of a Year 5 pupil with the condition.

Pupils at St Mary’s School in Broughton Gifford wore yellow to school recently in solidarity with Sophie Maidment.

To educate her fellow pupils, Sophie gave talks to the rest of the school about the challenges she faces daily, such as taking medication and using a nebuliser.

A member of the Friends of the School, Charlotte Godsiffe, said, “We were enormously proud of Sophie on the day as she self-assuredly gave talks to the rest of the school.

  • Blue Pool future still under review after works cleared

The future of Melksham’s Blue Pool site remains under review after Wiltshire Council confirmed that works carried out by the town council do not require planning permission.

The town council undertook works at the site, including alterations to a boundary wall to install gates, the installation of electric vehicle charging points and the placement of two shipping containers, in preparation for relocating its amenities team

The works were paused and the charging points removed after Wiltshire Council advised last month that planning permission was required. At the time, Wiltshire Council advised that applicants should not begin work until they had either received confirmation that planning permission was not required or had obtained planning permission.

Wiltshire Council has now confirmed that planning permission is not required, saying its initial advice was based on the information available at the time.
