TRIBUTES have poured in for a popular Melksham man, Leigh Gaskin, who has sadly died aged just 27 from cancer.

Friends and family have taken to Facebook to share their fond memories and tributes to the former Aloeric and George Ward School pupil.

One of his friends Paul Walker left a post on Leigh’s Facebook page that says, “Absolutely devastated that one of my oldest and dearest friends has passed away, you are an inspiration to everyone that knew you, no matter what was thrown at you in the past few years you battled everything with a smile. I will miss you and cherish the memories you have given me.”

“Leigh was the son of Lynn and Kevin Gaskin, brother to Jamie, Beccy and Daniel together with Duncan, Kara and Jo.” said his family. “He was also uncle to his precious nephews Max, Jack and beautiful Tess as well as a wonderful boyfriend to Fay.”

His sister Bec said, “He will be remembered for his positive outlook, great humour and plain silliness. Memories of his outstanding photobombing, dance moves, competitiveness and determination shine through. Leigh loved and was loved immeasurably, a true inspiration to all that were fortunate to have known him.”

More of his friends also paid tribute to Leigh. Chris Aylward said, “The term ‘legend’ gets over used so often these days. However Leigh Gaskin was a man that deserves that accolade. Always had a smile on his face laughing and joking, winding me up that Spurs were better than Arsenal. Then there was ‘football friends’ and of course Hurricanes playing 5-a-side and your unique ability to photobomb. There are many other memories that have already been said but I was proud to call you a friend and will miss you.”

Another friend Doug Stewart added, “Tonight I go to the Tavern. Tonight I order a song in honour. Tonight I request the FIVE MEGAMIX in honour of Leigh Gaskin.”

Leigh’s brother Daniel also took to Facebook to share his tribute. He said, “My brother and best friend Leigh was the strongest person I knew and he laughed in the face of cancer until the very end. Not once did he lose his dignity and he definitely didn’t lose the battle. I love you Leigh, I always will. You were the best brother I could have asked for. Everyone loved you, you were such a charmer and genuinely amazing person. You’ll always live on inside me, as I am just a younger version of you after all. All my traits, gags and skills were thanks to you. I’m so glad I was able to fly back from Edinburgh before you went, thank you for waiting for me. Shake and Bake.”

Leigh was a keen sportsman and played football for Melksham Park FC and worked at Celtic Manor Golf Club. He also attended Bath Spa University.

His commemoration service will tee off on Thursday 21st August at 11.30am at West Wilts Crematorium, Semington. This will be followed by a celebration of Leigh’s life at another chosen venue. No black attire please and family flowers only. Donations if desired can be made to D.J. Bewley Funeral Directors where, in time a charitable fund will be created in Leigh’s memory.

  • Council urges residents to cut back overgrown vegetation

Melksham Town Council is asking residents to help keep the town’s footpaths and pavements clear by trimming back any trees, hedges or shrubs that overhang public paths.

The appeal comes after reports of vegetation obstructing public walkways in several areas of the town.

The council hopes that residents checking and maintaining vegetation around their properties will help prevent minor issues from becoming larger obstructions and ensure public routes remain accessible.

Cllr Saffi Rabey said, “We have recently received a number of reports from residents about trees, hedges and bushes overhanging pavements and public footpaths.

  • Love Melksham Column: A resident’s love letters to her town

Park Yoga

This week, my love letter to Melksham is written from the sunny expanse of King George V Playing Field, in the peaceful presence that follows Park Yoga.

If you’ve been in the park on a Sunday morning in the summer, you may have seen people heading purposefully across the grass with yoga mats and water bottles. They arrange themselves near two friendly women in green T-shirts next to a fluttering green feather flag, inviting you to this week’s free session of Park Yoga.

This morning, as people arrived from every direction and rolled out their pink and purple mats, I was aware that I didn’t look as yoga-ready as most of them but I was also aware that this is a welcoming, non-judgmental space. Friendly smiles and nods of recognition were shared by a growing crowd of women, men and a handful of children, filling up this side of the field.

  • Are young people in Wiltshire facing barriers to employment?

By Megan Robinson, on work experience with Melksham News

A recent government review led by former health secretary Alan Milburn found that around one in eight people aged 18 to 24 are not in education, employment or training (NEET).

The findings have prompted debate about the barriers young people face when trying to find work and gain experience.

While on work experience with Melksham News, 17-year-old Megan Robinson spoke to recruiters, employers and a university student to explore whether young people in Wiltshire are facing similar challenges.

Recruiters say a lack of experience remains one of the biggest barriers for young jobseekers.

Sharon Chapman, managing director of Melksham-based New Resource Recruitment, said many young people are struggling to secure work in a difficult jobs market.

  • New provider takes over waste collections

Household waste and recycling collections in Wiltshire are now being delivered by a new provider.

Wiltshire Council has moved to a Local Authority Trading Company (LATC) model, with collections now carried out by Ubico, a company owned by local authorities which already provides environmental services across Gloucestershire and West Oxfordshire.

The household waste and recycling collection service was previously provided by Hills Waste Solutions for the past eight years.

The council says residents will continue to receive the same collections as usual, with no changes to collection days, frequencies or crews.

  • Research reveals Melksham link to forgotten England rugby player

A rugby historian researching a new book has solved a mystery that remained unsolved for more than 150 years, discovering that a long-forgotten England international was born in Melksham.

Phil Hill was researching the lives of England rugby players for his book, The Lives of England Rugby Players 1871-1899, when he began investigating the identity of Robert Henry Fowler, whose details had remained uncertain in official records.

The Rugby Football Union’s records listed the player only as either Robert or Richard Henry Fowler, born in 1859.

Newspaper reports described him simply as “a heavy, powerful forward” who played for Leeds and Yorkshire, while some historians mistakenly identified him as the son of a Watford postman.

Phil’s research has now established that the player was Robert Henry Fowler, born in Melksham on 6th February 1851 and the son of MP Robert Fowler.

  • Exciting new chapter for Gooding Accounts

Local accountancy firm Gooding Accounts has joined one of the UK’s fastest-growing accountancy and professional services groups, DJH.

It’s a move the company says will bring new opportunities for clients and staff while keeping its local Wiltshire roots firmly in place.

Founded in 2014 by Sam Gooding, the firm has built a strong reputation for supporting businesses across Wiltshire with a personal and proactive approach to accountancy.

Sam and Katy Gooding will continue to lead the team, and the business will carry on operating from its existing Wiltshire offices in Warminster, Melksham and Trowbridge. Clients will still be dealt with by the same team, offering the same outstanding service they have come to expect.

  • Plans unveiled for 200-home Berryfield development

Proposals for a 200-home development on land between Semington Road and Berryfield Lane have been unveiled as developers prepare to submit a planning application later this summer.

Bellway Homes presented the proposals at a public consultation held at Berryfield Village Hall last month, where residents were invited to view the plans and provide feedback.

The proposed development would cover around 11 hectares. The site includes three agricultural fields, together with previously developed land containing dilapidated Second World War-era buildings and land currently occupied by chicken sheds.
