Avon Bowls Club recently hosted a special match to celebrate the presidential year of Danny Holland, President of Bowls Wiltshire and a long-standing member of the Avon club.
Danny, who has been part of Avon BC for around 20 years and held various roles both at club level and within Bowls Wiltshire, brought a team made up of players from 19 clubs across the county to play a friendly fixture against Avon members.
The celebration match took place on Saturday 26th July, with Club Chairman Malcolm Hole welcoming players and guests. The afternoon began with a light-hearted ‘spider’ competition, where all players delivered one bowl simultaneously, aiming for a jack placed in the centre of the green. Sylvia Crabb, an Avon member, emerged victorious and claimed a bottle of whisky as her prize.
The main match followed, played across six rinks with four players per side, each playing 18 ends. Avon put in a strong performance, winning two of the six rinks – skipped by Mike Smith and Adie Bowell – but it was the Bowls Wiltshire team who took the overall win, claiming four rinks and a 31-shot victory.
Players and guests enjoyed refreshments from the club bar throughout the day, and after the match an excellent three-course meal was served by Avon volunteers. After the meal brief speeches were given by Club Captain Steve Fivash and Danny Holland.
Should you be interested in playing bowls, Avon’s club night is on a Tuesday from 6pm at the Melksham Campus site; please contact the club abc-secretary@hotmail.co.uk for more details.
