Tributes paid to Melksham rugby player

Tributes have been shared for a long-standing player at Melksham Rugby Club who has died aged 42.

Phil Stone died suddenly on Wednesday 20th May. He had been a member of Melksham Rugby Club for 18 years and was described as a ‘multi-talented’ player, having a playing career spanning the 1st team through to coaching.

His children Gwion, 18, and Addien, 16, have launched a fundraiser to help cover funeral costs.

They said, “Our dad was a funny man. He lit up every room he walked into. His laugh could be heard from miles away and we still hear it as if he were still with us.

“We miss his sarcasm and his constant jokes. He always said what he wanted and was never afraid to say it loud and clear. He loved a crowd and attention and we want to be able to give him that one last time.”

Their mother Victoria thanked those who have already donated. She said Phil “was a bit of a chameleon so could get on with anybody” and had played rugby since he was young.

She added, “It is a massive loss, a loss that didn’t need to happen.”

Any money left over will be donated to a mental health charity chosen by Gwion and Addien.

President of Melksham Rugby Club, Richard Carlile, said, “Phil was a huge part of the MRFC famil
y and we are truly heartbroken by the news. Phil was an integral part of the Club, known and loved by many, involved not only as a player, but a coach, mentor and dear friend. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family, children and close ones at this difficult time”.

Originally from Swansea, Phil moved to Melksham 18 years ago to raise a family.
