A fundraising campaign by Melksham Lions Club has raised enough funds for a local charity to purchase a new blood bike to transport essential medical supplies between hospitals.
The organisation has raised £16,000 for the Freewheelers Blood Bike Service, marking the end of a two-year campaign.
The charity provides a free out-of-hours courier service for the NHS across hospitals in the South West. Volunteer drivers transport blood, specimens, patient notes, X-rays, breast milk and other medical supplies, and also deliver each night to two local air ambulance bases.
Club president Simon White said the Freewheelers provide a vital service.
“As a biker myself, it was my idea back in 2024 to raise the money for the charity because all the work they do is voluntary. There are no paid employees at all. Everybody has done really, really well and we are pleased we have raised the funds for the purchase of a new bike.”
With the help of the community, the Lions Club raised the funds through their annual Christmas campaign, which sees the Lions Santa Float travel around residential streets in Melksham, Easter hamper raffles and various car boot sales.
A cheque presentation was held at a Lions Club meeting on Monday 1st June and the new bike will be purchased using the funds.
