OVER 50 invited guests and club members recently attended the opening ceremony of the Golden Fleece Cricket Club’s new ground and pavilion.
One of the club’s new landlords, Jack Nicholas, along with his father Bob, cut the ribbon following some brief introductions and speeches from president John Prentice and chairman Niall MacDougall. The club was also presented with a plaque by the Community First Group, who, in conjunction with the Hills group, provided funds for the new pavilion.
Amongst the guests were founder members, old players, ardent supporters, neighbours and officials from Melksham Area board and Melksham Without Parish Council. There was also a display of old and more recent photos charting the club’s history from its beginnings in 1985.
Niall said, “This is the result of a lot of hard work by many people and sees the beginning of a new era for the club. While other clubs might have folded, the Golden Fleece has taken the opportunity to move the club forward and provide a facility to be proud of.”
The ceremony was followed by a 20 over game against local rivals Erlestoke which the Fleece appropriately won.
