A LOCAL primary school has achieved a 100% pass rate, placing it as one of the top schools in the county in the latest national primary school league tables, with other local schools scoring well above the national average.
St Mary’s, Broughton Gifford Primary School, finished 19th nationally out of over 2,000 primary schools thanks to the higher grade results achieved by their pupils. The school is one of only 13 in Wiltshire to score 100%, placing them as one of the top schools in the tables released last month. The tables show the results of last year’s key stage 2 tests in English and maths, which were taken by 11-year-olds in May.
St George’s Primary School in Semington had the most significant local increase with 78 per cent of pupils achieving level 4 or above in English and maths compared to last year’s 57 per cent. Forest and Sandridge was the highest achieving school after Broughton Gifford with 83 per cent; while other results were: Holt Primary School, 81 per cent; Seend Church of England School, 78 per cent; Churchfields The Village School in Atworth, 71 per cent; Bowerhill Primary School, 70 per cent; Aloeric Primary School, 67 per cent; Shaw Primary School, 65 per cent and King’s Park, 49 per cent.
The national average of pupils to achieve level 4 or above in English and maths is set at 75 per cent. But 100 per cent of Broughton Gifford Primary School pupils hit the national benchmark. The school who also achieved 100% last year celebrated more higher grade results this year with 100% achieving level five in maths and 17% getting the highest grade possible, level six. 66% of pupils achieved level five in writing, with 17% achieving level six. 83% achieved level five in reading.
Headteacher of St Mary’s, Broughton Gifford School, Angela McAuley said, “We are extremely pleased with the results. The children and teachers work so hard throughout the year and to have them rewarded with such a set of fantastic results is great.
“We work closely with all of our pupils so we knew they could achieve great things but to have 100% level four and so many higher grades too means we are very pleased.
“We have excellent teachers here and this is testament to that.”
The teachers who worked with the successful pupils were Sarah Bennett and Ali McDonnell. Speaking to the Melksham News about the results Sarah Bennett said, “I am so happy for the children that the hard work paid off and they got great results. They work hard throughout and are a pleasure to teach.”
