Christmas is traditionally a time of giving presents to loved ones, but what about the rest of the time?
Volunteers at Melksham and District Link Scheme give the whole year round and all it costs them is a bit of time.
Organisers say, “In return, they get that warm glow of satisfaction for helping their fellows in the Melksham area who struggle to get to medical appointments. The workload for Melksham Link volunteers is increasing year on year, and we inevitably find ourselves asking for more volunteers to manage these demands.
“How would vulnerable local people manage without this service? Do you have occasional space in your life to help us keep going? We particularly need coordinators to take calls from our clients, then liaise with our drivers and arrange transport to their medical appointments. Volunteers work from home for two or three consecutive days about every five weeks, so it’s not a very demanding commitment and can be very flexible to fit in with your diary and other commitments.
“We are a very friendly and supportive group and always help each other out if the current rota turns out to be inconvenient.
“Full training is given for as long as feels right for the volunteer and help from another volunteer is always available. It’s a 100% voluntary role, but extremely rewarding as our clients are so kind and grateful. So, if you’re fond of people and have a friendly, confident telephone manner, we would love it if you could contact us for an informal, no obligation chat.
“In addition to coordinators, we always need more drivers. This role involves as much or as little time as you have available. There is no commitment to a regular day or time. Drivers inform the duty coordinator of their availability for the following week and the coordinator will allocate trips to suit. The trips are mainly to client’s medical appointments locally and a bit further afield. It’s a voluntary role using your own car, but you will be reimbursed 45p per mile for petrol costs.
“If you have a bit of free time, are friendly, outgoing and love driving, please get in touch for an informal no obligation chat.
“We’d love to hear from anyone who might like a bit more information. Or if you’re too busy, but know someone who may like to help us, please talk to them about this editorial.”
