During 2018, Atworth Camera Club meetings have covered Rembrandt lighting, altered reality, colour management, camera basics, the history of monochrome photography, composition, a personal photographic journey, a Walk around Atworth illuminating some of the village’s history, capturing movement, coloured houses and chalets, and critiquing images.
Alan Lee reports, “For our final meeting of the year on Monday 26th November, Horace Prickett gave a talk on the Northern Lights, in which he has taken a keen interest ever since he first saw them from his bedroom window in Bratton when he was just eight years old.
“Horace told us of the many trips he has undertaken to try and see this wonderful phenomenon. The aurora lasts for only about 10 – 15 minutes each day, leaving plenty of time to fill with other activities. His trips have included cruising up the coast of Norway, stopping off at places en-route, which afforded opportunities to take on more adventurous pursuits such as dog sledding across to the next fjord to catch up with the ship, before sailing on to the next port of call. He has also been to Iceland, where he travelled somewhat precariously up a glacier in a converted Russian missile carrier, walked around tunnels inside the glacier and traversed a great crevasse on a makeshift steel girder bridge with clear sky 400 feet above and a 400 foot drop below. He has also taken flights from Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter that travelled beyond the Orkneys and either performed a huge figure of eight or flew in circle so that passengers on both sides could view the spectacle.
“This was a very interesting talk and left no opportunity for members to show their “wildlife” pictures, which was the club’s project for the autumn season. This will now be held over to a meeting in the new year.
“The club’s next project will be “Winter Events”, which could include Christmas and New Year, or perhaps sporting or other events, but snow and frost scenes will also qualify. Just get out your cameras and try to be creative with your pictures.
“The first meeting of the year will be held on Monday 28th January in Atworth Village Hall at 7.30pm.”
